It was the middle of the summer and I was at my village helping my grandparents on their agriculture job. Back then, there was no internet connection and, besides going out with friends, there were not really many things to do on that isolated place. With this in mind, I picked up some books from our library before leaving the city. River God was one of them. When the tiring day on the field was reaching its end, I would go to my bed and read this book. It was fascinating for me. There were many nights that I lost my sleep, because I could not stop reading. Then, I found myself thinking of its plot and characters during the work time. I was obsessed with it ! The days passed and eventually I reached the end. I was quite sad that it finished. This book was a portal for me. A portal that took me from the monotonous and predictable world of the village, and led me to the exciting, mysterious and beautifull Ancient Egypt. I feel great nostalgia for this book. The place and time in which I was reading it, might be the main reason for that .. Since then, I've revisited this book twice. I still think that it is a marvelous historical fiction. The only thing that comes to my mind as a negative, is the one-dimensionality of our villain. Lord Intéf is an evil psychopath. His only motivation is to gain more power and gold. To achieve this, he is willing to use cruel methods. In my mind, people are more complicated than that. Wilbur Smith tries to make us hate this character and succeeds in doing so. But, if you ask me, a villain that is purely evil and has no bright side, is something that only exists in fairy tales. This is a good reason to give this 4 stars, but, due to my nostalgia, I couldn't help it. I gave it 5 .
