There was an old book on a corner of my library shelve that caught my attention. The name "Eagle in the Sky" was an indifferent title, but the "Wilbur Smith" that was written next to it, gave it some interest. I opened it's coffee-colored pages and started reading..
I was confused in the beginning. Many things happened in a small amount of pages and I could not get interested in what I was reading. I started getting disappointed when things changed. The plot got a slow and smooth pace and there were some emotional moments here and there. Not good, not bad, i thought to myself.
The story up to this point, was pretty simple, but I didn't have any idea on how is this going to evolve. Well, some parts were predictable but the bigger picture was still unclear - and it will remain like this until the end.
Then, there was the action. My interest spiked and I could not stop turning the pages to grasp those incredible descriptions of air battles that Mr Smith created. Then I was convinced. This is going to become one of the best books I've ever read.
After those air battles, the plot gets to places I didn't expect it to go. I don't want to spoil the details, so I will only tell you that if you cut this book in half, the second part of it could easily stand as an independent title.
In most cases, the novels that were written like this, confuse the reader. Eagle in the Sky by Wilbur Smith though, uses this technique masterfully. The excitement of the reader grows the more he gets closer to the final pages.
Now let's talk about the overall picture of the book. The story is simple but unpredictable at the same time. There are some emotional moments, and I have to admit that I almost dissolved into tears at one point. Even though the characters were relatively simple, i got emotionally evolved in them. Also there were some symbolisms on the book. Some people don't like such things, but, in my opinion, they were positive additions to the read.
I thing that, that was all I had to say. Eagle in the Sky by Wilbur Smith is a Book that was exciting and emotional and from now on, I will consider it to be one of the best books I've ever read. You should definitely check it out !
